By the way, when are we going to go up there? Oh, and apparently, J.F. on the chest stands for James Fitzhugh, the quartermaster on Lady’s Revenge.

Hmmm. This could be really useful.

Great work, Maggie! :) Thanks for letting me know. You can head on up if you want. I’ll meet you there in about an hour. I want to check if there’s any reference to that kind of thing in Davies’ travel journal first. Zak hit send and then went into his temporary office.

Maybe he could find something about a letter in Davies’ journal. He hefted the volume and started to leaf through it. But he paused when he got to the thicker-than-normal section. Could this section be concealing something important? Maybe even relating to the letter Maggie had mentioned? He ran his fingers lightly along the edge of the antique paper.

He examined the paper more closely. Then rooted around in a drawer until he found a pair of tweezers.

Very carefully, he peeled away the edges to reveal…a letter.

He looked down at the water-stained and warped sheet.

Port Royal, Jamaica

3 March 1699 Henry Davies

Dearest Henry,

Oh glorious day! My love, I have the happiest of news. Kidd surely made good on his promise of obtaining me a command—and a new and faster ship. Not only that, but I have also begun amassing a crew.

One of Kidd’s former crewmen—you know of whom I speak—though I have duly made efforts to dissuade him, has come aboard the Lady’s Revenge as Quartermaster. For what reasons I cannot foretell. Oh, but how the lines and sails of this ship remind me of another deck on another sea, with your arms ’round my waist.

I cannot but smile at the memory of your face as you thought me to be a lady among a ship full of cutthroats when you came aboard in the Far East…

It feels an age since I last laid eyes upon your dear countenance. Though I must have faith that we shall again be united, once your western trek with the Hudson’s Bay Company has ended. I confess, I shall rest easy once you have safely rejoined that Mi’kmaq settlement on St.
